Design Review Process

The preparation of the detailed design of the I-95 Ramps project was advanced under an extremely aggressive schedule. In order to meet this schedule the Rhode Island Department of Transportation in partnership with the Federal Highway Administration instituted a unique project specific continuous design review process. This design review process was accomplished through regularly scheduled project meetings, conducted on a bi-weekly basis.

Members of the project Consultant design team and a "design review committee" chaired by the RIDOT's Chief Engineer James R. Capldi, P. E. and consisting of various FHWA and RIDOT personnel attended these meetings. With this unique approach the RIDOT and FHWA were able to review and oversee the preparation of the design of each of the multiple ten (10) construction contracts. With this format design comments and project issues were resolved and immediately incorporated into the design process. It was only through the commitment of the project team to this process was the design successfully completed in a little over ten (10) months.
