The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) has aggressively advanced the construction of the improved access to Interstate 95 at Exit 22 by completing the majority of the construction to coincide with the August 20,1999 opening of the Providence Place Mall. This required the completion and opening to traffic of the following components.
1. Memorial Boulevard/Francis Street Intersection Improvements
2. Route 6/10 Ramps Improvements (Between I-95 and Dean Street)
3. Dean Street/Kinsley Avenue Improvements
There remains one last segment to complete:
1. New I-95 Southbound Off-Ramp to Providence Place (formerly Kinsley Avenue)
The foundation work and piers have been poured for this 1,100-foot new ramp bridge and are ready for receipt of the steel beams. A major milestone will be reached on this last remaining portion of the project with the installation of the steel beams scheduled to commence in early November 1999. This setting of the new steel beams will continue throughout most of the month of November 1999.
Two types of steel beams will be erected depending on its location on the alignment of the new ramp. Within the curved portion of the new ramp, dual curved box girders each measuring 64 inches in depth will be installed. Within the tangent portion of the new ramp, three plate girders each measuring 64 inches in depth will be installed. Following the installation of the new steel beams, the concrete deck forming and pouring will commence.
The construction of this new southbound ramp will continue through mid-2000.
