Project Purpose
The purpose of this project is to improve safety, not capacity, along the roadway by constructing paved shoulders. A Paved Shoulder Study was conducted by the Florida Department of Transportation in 2004 that resulted in the recommendation to construct paved shoulders along the County Road 42 corridor. The primary reason for the shoulders is to add a recovery area for errant vehicles. In addition to providing shoulders, County Road 42 will be realigned easterly from State Road 19 to eliminate the offset intersection.
Anticipated Improvements
This project will focus on improving safety and upgrading the pavement surface. The following proposed improvements are anticipated:
Replace existing traffic signal equipment to facilitate intersection movement
Widen the existing 24 foot roadway to 30 feet (2-12’ travel lanes and 2-3’ shoulders)
Re-align the eastern leg of CR 42 to the north to eliminate the offset intersection
Improve clear zone zones
Improve drainage
Public Meeting
The second public meeting for the project was held on May 15 at the Umatilla High School from 6-8PM. At this meeting, the recommended improvements were presented to the public. A copy of the presentation material can be viewed in the Documents/Plans section of this website.
Project Schedule
The project is currently at the 60% design stage. Identification of right-of-way acquisitions is almost complete. The consultant is proceeding to the 90% stage of plan development. It is anticipated that the 90% design will be completed by early October. It is anticipated that the SR 19/CR 42 intersection improvements and realignment will be advertised in early 2008. The shoulder construction will be advertised for construction in 2009.
