Lime Kiln Bridge Replacement Colchester and South Burlington, VermontThe original Lime Kiln Bridge, spanning Winooski Gorge and New England Central Railroad to connect Colchester and South Burlington, Vermont, was an architectural and scenic gem. Listed on the State Register of Historic Places, it is a heavily used crossing that carries the primary access road to Burlington International Airport. Additionally, it abuts the campus of St. Michael’s College, which generates significant pedestrian traffic.
The replacement Lime Kiln Bridge recreated the open-spandrel concrete arch structure, pinning the arch foundation into the gorge ledge, and replicated the bridge’s decorative geometrical features wherever possible. Additionally, VHB designed improvements including wider sidewalks, travelway, precast/prestressed concrete members, ornamental bridge and street lighting, and architecturally treated abutments and retaining walls. The bridge’s concrete deck is protected from deicing salts by incorporating a protective membrane system.
Finally, to highlight the innovative project features, an adjacent concrete overlook is perched at the edge of the gorge with ornamental railings, lighting, and a historic plaque depicting the past and present features of this site. As it is a vital transportation link, Vermont Agency of Transportation and VHB project managers implemented a 14-month construction schedule, which included uninterrupted vehicular, railway, and pedestrian access throughout. The new bridge opened in October 2006.
