Keeping a competitive edge in professional sports takes constant vigilance. To ensure the 30-year old River Course remains a worthy attraction for world-class golfers and spectators, as well as an integral component of the local economy, Kingsmill approached VHB to assist architects Tim Liddy and Pete Dye in renovating the course. A major component of the redesign was the restoration plan for a 2,100 foot stream corridor. Well versed in the field of natural channel design, we suggested dramatic changes like excising the culverts and removing bulkheads, reestablishing sediment transport and improving habitat and aesthetics. With significant grading, complimenting the revised golf course layout, the new meandering stream is capable of dissipating high energy stormflow and a beautiful addition to the natural setting of the site. In addition, it provided compensatory mitigation necessary for the permit process.
