Tortola Pier Park

Tortola, British Virgin Islands

When this client needed a team that specialized in resort planning and design and carried a proven track record of getting projects built in the Caribbean, their first phone call was to VHB’s Landscape Architecture team. Armed with extensive design experience and the ability to navigate from project construction to ribbon cutting, the Port Authority counted on VHB’s understanding of local development constraints, culture and the technical realities needed in the design of the physical framework of the streets, plazas, gardens and fountains that contribute to the overall pier side retail environment. The complexity of expanding this site with the integration of the utilities and infrastructure required careful planning, urban design and landscape design to create an economic viable “themed retail” environment and “Gateway” to historic Roadtown–making it the ideal place for both residents and visitors to participate in a true island experience. The pier expansion accommodates more than 4,000 cruise ship passengers visiting daily in Tortola.
