Boston-Logan International Airport Sustainability & On-Call Transportation Planning

Boston, MA

VHB partnered with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport) on a range of projects to sustainably enhance and modernize Boston-Logan International Airport. Starting with the Guidelines for Sustainable Airport Construction, which are part of a larger Sustainability Management Plan, we helped Logan Airport communicate the concept of sustainability and engage employees, tenants, and contractors to expand awareness and leverage the existing structure to develop, monitor, measure, and improve sustainability programs.

These sustainability guidelines served as a basis for the redevelopment of Delta Airlines Terminal A, the world’s first airport facility to achieve Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Terminal A was the first major U.S. terminal build since 9/11 and includes a 362,000-square-foot main terminal and a 284,000-square-foot satellite concourse connected by an underground pedestrian moving walkway. VHB provided permitting services and suggested many cost-saving, sustainable, and energy efficient features and the new terminal was designed to include airline operations facilities, baggage claim and recheck areas, and other essential services for travel.

VHB also made recommendations to modernize Terminal E to efficiently accommodate current and projected international operations and passengers. This project includes approximately 94,000 square feet of new construction and 121,000 square feet of renovated space, including an enhanced concourse, upgraded concessions, and airfield modifications to meet required FAA safety and design standards. VHB prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) in compliance with National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and successfully made the case that the project was not subject to Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA). Our team also directed a joint EA/Draft Environmental Impact Report (DEIR) under NEPA and MEPA. The project is in the planning and design phase and VHB is providing ground noise monitoring and access planning.
