VHB is leading the development of the Rural Statewide Active Transportation Plan (Rural ATP) for the Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT). This first-of-its-kind planning effort will provide a plan, based on national best practices, to improve active transportation safety, connectivity, and comfort levels statewide, focusing on rural areas and small towns. The plan will identify potential projects, policies, programs, and other strategies aimed at improving mobility and safety for vulnerable road users, cyclists, and pedestrians. VHB developed and is executing a robust engagement strategy with key stakeholders and the general public to better understand current perceptions and conditions related to active transportation and form a collective vision and guiding principles for Georgia’s active transportation future.
VHB employed a variety of quantitative and qualitative analyses to develop baseline existing conditions for active transportation modes. These include a mix of systemic and hotspot analysis methods to identify and prioritize safety issues for cyclists and pedestrians, a connectivity assessment to identify the current active transportation network and how it serves areas of high potential demand and equity considerations, a bicycle level of comfort assessment for the current active transportation network, and an evaluation of current practices, policies, and funding related to active transportation.
