Resiliency

Preserving the past, protecting the future.

Resiliency is about preparing for the future. It means proactively thinking about impacts to where and how we live, work, and play. Sustainable strategies need to be implemented to protect areas susceptible to major disruption, including extreme weather events. How these challenges are solved helps build a strong foundation, ultimately making communities future-focused and ready for what’s to come.

VHB works across communities and markets—from rural, suburban, and major metropolitan areas, to higher ed and healthcare campuses, transportation networks, and real estate developments—to prepare and strengthen them for long-term impacts, providing a greater opportunity to recover quickly. Our approach to resiliency utilizes data and technology to focus on the big picture, recognizes the importance of a particular place, anticipates challenges and needs before they arise, and helps to implement strategies for coastal resilience and climate adaptation.

The Chesterfield Heights and Grandy Village neighborhoods in Norfolk, VA, frequently faced coastal flooding due to sea level rise. As a coastal defense strategy, more than 2,000 linear feet of living shoreline were constructed to protect and preserve these historic communities.
