VHB recently joined an exclusive list of industry leading consultants in signing the inaugural American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Infrastructure 2050 Commitment Program. The Program “supports the vision that all infrastructure professionals shall understand, reduce, and eliminate embodied emissions within infrastructure projects to net zero by 2050.” As a company founded on stewardship, VHB’s commitment to this program further demonstrates our dedication to creating a more sustainable future.
As part of the ASCE Infrastructure 2050 Commitment Program, VHB’s Carbon Reduction Lead, Ken Donald, will participate in monthly meetings to accelerate industrywide decarbonization efforts. On an annual basis, VHB will also:
- Develop and update an Embodied Carbon Action Plan;
- Submit key data to analyze embodied emissions and set attainable reduction targets for future projects; and
- Promote educational content and advocate for the advancement of embodied emissions reduction strategies, within VHB and across the industry.
“Our industry has a responsibility to drive transformative change and lead the way in further integrating sustainability into our operations and how we deliver for our clients,” said President and CEO Mike Carragher. “Joining this coalition is an important step to advancing decarbonization industrywide and addressing climate change.”
VHB continually leverages data, technology, and sustainability to transform how team members work and deliver projects. Earlier this year, VHB implemented its embodied carbon pilot program on the I-89 Exit 14 Interchange in Vermont, creating an embodied carbon calculator to baseline carbon emissions. This allows for a holistic approach in evaluating the embodied carbon impacts associated with all stages of a project's life cycle and informs design decisions, including implementing more sustainable alternatives.
