Smart Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, PA

As part of the City of Pittsburgh’s Advanced Transportation and Congestion Management Technologies Deployment program, known as SmartPGH, the City is leveraging technology to improve mobility, safety, and quality of life for residents, visitors, and businesses throughout the region. The program focuses on creating a connected corridor network that supports both current operations and future intelligent transportation applications.

VHB is supporting the City across multiple phases of SmartPGH, helping translate the operational vision into practical, implementable solutions. Working from the program-wide Concept of Operations, VHB helped define the Smart Spines communications backbone, a resilient network designed to connect field devices, traffic management systems, and emerging technologies.

Building on this foundation, VHB is designing a managed fiber optic backbone, Traffic Management System enhancements, and ITS deployment across key coordinators. This includes signal systems, video detection cameras, roadway weather sensors, and Connected Vehicle Infrastructure, all integrated to support AI, video analytics, and edge computing. Cybersecurity and system resilience are incorporated throughout, confirming long-term reliability.

By connecting technology with operational goals, VHB is helping Pittsburgh advance a safer, smarter, and more responsive transportation network, improving mobility and quality of life for residents, visitors, and businesses.
