Hooksett Turnpike & Birchdale Bridge Replacements

Concord, NH

The Hooksett Turnpike and Birchdale Road Bridges are sister structures located about a half mile from each other along Bela Brook. Both bridges were on the Bridge Municipal Red List, which details the municipally owned bridges in need of repairs due to structural deficiencies. Because of the bridges’ age and geomorphic and hydraulic insufficiency, the project team decided that replacement was necessary rather than rehabilitation.

Funded and administered through the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) State Aid Bridge Program, with corresponding City funds, the City of Concord retained VHB to provide design and construction support services for both bridge replacements. Our team provided support for survey and wetland delineation, development of contract plans, engineer’s estimate, and bid documents.

For both bridges, our team recommended replacing the existing structures with a 45-foot-long single-span pile-supported prestressed concrete butted deck beam bridge at each location. Construction began in 2020 and was completed in 2021.
