As design consultant, VHB collaborated with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) and the City of Manchester to create a new link for pedestrians and cyclists along a mile-long stretch of the multiuse South Manchester Rail Trail. This project included the rehabilitation of a historic wooden railroad trestle over Cohas Brook, the rehabilitation of a historic failed culvert, and the installation of two Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) to enhance pedestrian safety at designated crosswalks.
By working together with city and state departments, following New Hampshire’s Local Public Agency (LPA) process, and honoring the historical significance of the site, the City and VHB completed construction of the rail trail in May 2024. The path has become an integral part of the City of Manchester’s fabric and will help connect many communities through the Granite State Rail Trail.
