The American Council of Engineering Companies of Vermont (ACEC/VT) recently honored VHB with three prestigious Excellence in Engineering Awards, with the Royalton New England Central Railroad (NECR) project receiving the distinguished Green Mountain Award. This award is given each year for the best overall engineering project in the competition. These accolades highlight VHB's innovative solutions and significant contributions to enhancing Vermont’s infrastructure and advancing sustainability efforts.
The winning projects include:
Vermont Agency of Transportation (VTrans), Royalton—New England Central Railroad (NECR) Bridge Over VT Route 14, Royalton, VT

Royalton Completed Bridge View.
VHB received the prestigious Green Mountain Award for replacing the Royalton NECR Bridge, a project that enhances safety and transportation efficiency. The team used accelerated bridge construction techniques to construct the rail bridge on a new alignment over Vermont Route 14. This project was notable for using self-propelled modular transporters, a first for a VTrans project.
Removing hazards caused by high-load vehicles, the design increased the clearance from 11 feet to 14 feet and 6 inches. This improves safety for rail traffic, boosts economic prospects, and allows trucks to pass freely. The design also incorporated sustainable water management, illustrating VHB's dedication to resilient infrastructure.
Farm and Wilderness Foundation, Rockefeller Dam Removal, Plymouth, VT

This project successfully removed a deteriorating Significant Hazard dam that was no longer needed. VHB collaborated with the dam’s owner to develop a cost-effective restoration plan that aligned with the organization’s land management objectives, reconnected aquatic habitat, and protected historical resources like the lime kiln downstream. The team sequenced the work over several seasons to reduce costs and environmental impacts, including draining and revegetating the impoundment before breaching the dam to limit sediment discharge. The restored landscape provides enhanced habitat connectivity and improved water quality.
Additionally, the team navigated complex permitting processes and helped the Farm & Wilderness Foundation secure $200,000 in grants to complete the project.

VHB's contribution to the South Street Solar project marks a milestone in expanding renewable energy capacity. In partnership with Middlebury College and Encore Renewable Energy, VHB developed a 5-MW solar facility integral to the College’s Energy2028 initiative aimed at achieving 100 percent renewable energy use. This project meets nearly 40 percent of the college’s energy needs and incorporates agrivoltaics to manage vegetation sustainably and promote diversity.
Because the site was situated partly in a flood hazard area, the team addressed flood risks, navigated complex permitting, and secured necessary protections, setting a precedent for institutions adopting renewable solutions.
"Our team's collaborative spirit and visionary approach are evident in these projects, which aim to enhance Vermont's infrastructure and foster vibrant communities," said David Saladino, PE, Vermont Managing Director. "We are proud to play a key role in these efforts and are committed to creating sustainable solutions while preserving Vermont's natural and cultural treasures."
