Last week, VHB led five presentations at the National Hydraulic Engineering Conference (NHEC), offering insights on practical, innovative engineering solutions to flood mitigation, post-disaster resiliency, and future-ready roadway design. The biennial conference brings together hydraulic and environmental engineers, roadway designers, water pollution specialists, and more to address the dynamic challenges facing modern hydraulic infrastructure.
VHB's presentations thoughtfully addressed the conference's theme, "Fast and Fluid-ous: Racing the Storm Surge of Innovation," and focused on forward-thinking hydraulic engineering solutions in today's rapidly evolving world.

Water Resources Engineer Joe Airoldi shared insights on innovative flood hazard mitigation strategies, highlighting VHB's work on the VTrans Route 302 Berlin Complex and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Public Assistance Hazard Mitigation process.
Bryce Corlett and J.D. Hines
Focusing on resilient roadway design for wetland environments, Senior Coastal Engineer Bryce Corlett and I-64 Water Resources Market Leader J.D. Hines spoke about the Pungo Ferry Road Improvement project, which sought to improve the safety and accessibility of the road as part of the City of Virginia Beach's Flood Protection Strategy.
Bryce and J.D. also presented “A New Standard for Resiliency Planning: Engineering Solutions in Portsmouth, VA,” which focused on case studies and lessons learned from VHB’s recent coastal resilience initiatives along Portsmouth’s vulnerable coastlines.

Water Resources Engineer Shams Al-Almin teamed up with the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to speak about the NC 197S Progressive Design-Build project, which utilized 2D Hydraulics to advance post-disaster resilience in North Carolina after Hurricane Helene.

In his presentation, "The Unusual Suspects: Scour-Rating Forgotten Bridges," Senior Water Resources Engineer Dave Cloutier shared case studies, best practices, and lessons learned from recent bridge appraisals across Maine.
