The Hunts Point Interstate Access Project Contract 1, a major initiative aimed at improving transit access and enhancing pedestrian mobility in the Hunts Point Peninsula, has been recognized with top honors at the recent Design-Build Institute of America (DBIA) Conference & Expo. The project's dedication to excellence in transportation and construction was rewarded with three prestigious awards: the National Award of Merit in Transportation, the Best in VDC (Virtual Design in Construction), and the National Award of Excellence for Transportation.

Through transportation improvement initiatives, the Hunts Point Interstate Access Project sought to enhance quality of life and spur economic development for the South Bronx community. VHB led the civil design for the reconstruction of the heavily traveled freeway within a congested urban corridor, all while maintaining the existing number of mainline travel lanes. This essential commercial trucking route had become burdened by excessive truck traffic on local roads, safety concerns involving pedestrian crossings, high crash rates, and substandard structures over Amtrak and CSX railways.

In close collaboration with the design-build team, VHB orchestrated extensive design coordination to adhere to an aggressive construction schedule, minimize costs, and meet all project requirements. Notably, the team fast-tracked critical milestones, such as the approval of the Phase 2 Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan/Notice of Intent from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. This achievement allowed construction activities to proceed on schedule, showcasing the team’s commitment to efficiency.

"The Hunts Point Interstate Access project, beyond improving transportation infrastructure, is about enhancing livability, increasing safety, and fostering a healthier environment for the South Bronx community," said Tom Velleca, VHB's Director of Alternative Delivery. "Receiving these awards at the DBIA conference underscores the positive, meaningful change that this project brings. It's a testament to the dedication and innovation of our team, and we're incredibly proud to deliver projects that make a real difference in people's lives."
