Carbon Reduction Lead Ken Donald, PE, has recently been appointed to national and state embodied carbon initiatives, further advancing his leadership in climate-focused design and low-carbon infrastructure.
Ken will serve on the Technical Advisory Committee (TAC) supporting the Massachusetts Embodied Carbon Intergovernmental Council. As a member of the TAC, Ken will provide technical guidance to inform updates to the Massachusetts Embodied Carbon Reduction Plan, including advising on material reporting requirements, global warming potential (GWP) thresholds, and the transition to project-level carbon targets. He will also help assess industry readiness for innovative lower emission materials and support the development of baseline measurements for the state of Massachusetts.
Ken has also been appointed to the American Society of Civil Engineers Structural Engineering Institute (ASCE SEI) Towards Zero Carbon Roadmap Task Committee. This initiative brings together industry leaders to define what zero carbon means for structural engineering and establish a practical, industry-wide path forward. With a focus on embodied carbon, this committee will develop a technical roadmap outlining actionable strategies, key milestones, and alignment with broader ASCE SEI climate mitigation goals.
“These opportunities build on the momentum we’re seeing across the industry,” said Ken. “Advancing embodied carbon reduction requires both strong policy frameworks and practical guidance for implementation. I’m excited to contribute to strategies that will help move both forward.”
Ken’s appointments underscore VHB’s ongoing investment in sustainability and our commitment to leading meaningful change across the AEC industry.
