State-of-the-art parking facility wins for architectural design.

The International Parking and Mobility Institute (IPMI) recently honored the Massachusetts Convention Center Carpark with an Apex Award for Architectural Design, which recognizes projects that elevate the industry and deliver unique solutions to complex challenges.

The Massachusetts Convention Center Carpark—located adjacent to the MassMutual Center in Springfield, MA—replaced a deteriorated garage built more than 50 years ago that was operating at only 70 percent capacity. VHB collaborated with key stakeholders from the City of Springfield, the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority (MCCA), and design firm Desman Associates to demolish and replace the garage with an updated, future-ready design.

VHB designed the exterior improvements to the garage that addressed accessibility deficiencies and modified sidewalks outside the facility to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. To facilitate construction, our team provided traffic management services and recommendations throughout the building phase.

The new, state-of-the-art parking facility is five stories, 350,000 square feet, and comprises 817 parking spaces with sustainability features such as EV infrastructure and charging stations. Enhancing the visitor experience, the forward-looking development will provide easy access to the MassMutual Center. In addition, retail and restaurant space on the first level of the garage will activate foot traffic and invigorate the community at large.

VHB also worked extensively on a vibrant, multi-use plaza adjacent to the garage known as “The Landing.” Located on Bruce Landon Way, the new area features 12,900 square feet of open-air, multipurpose space, prime for hosting community events, receptions, concerts, and more. In tandem with the new carpark, The Landing will continue to drive economic growth, enhance walkability, and accentuate the hospitality and tourism industry in Western Massachusetts.

“We’re proud to have been a part of this impactful project that will stimulate the local economy, enhance the visitor experience for MassMutual Center patrons, and benefit neighborhood residents,” said Springfield Land Development Team Leader Michael Petrin
