Peter Smiar, Vermont Director of Land Development, was recently featured in Engineering News-Record, sharing insights on VHB’s role in the current $5 billion expansion of Killington Ski Resort. VHB is leading civil engineering for the massive project, which will include a base ski village linking Killington and Pico Mountains. Peter reflected on the project’s unique challenges, such as coordinating parking and phased removal of existing lodges as the resort remains open during construction. Another challenge Peter noted is how to accommodate cars, bikes, skiers, pedestrians, and shuttles while still protecting natural resources—all while staying within permitting and regulatory confines. Because construction is split between the Town of Killington and Killington Resort, Peter also highlighted the importance of consistent communication and collaboration between permittees and state agencies to keep the project moving.
