This week, the American Public Work Association (APWA) honored the South Manchester Rail Trail with the Public Works Project of the Year Award in the category of Historical Restoration/Preservation for less than $5 million. Project Manager Frank Koczalka attended the ceremony in Chicago to accept the award.

The APWA Public Works Project of the Year Awards recognize excellence in management, administration, and implementation of public works projects, highlighting the seamless collaboration between managing agencies, consultants, architects, engineers, and contractors who work together to complete public works projects.

“This award is a testament to our collaboration with the City of Manchester and DBU Construction,” said Frank. “We’re proud to be part of the historical preservation for this monumental piece of Manchester history, and we're already witnessing its positive impact on the community.”

The South Manchester Rail Trail project involved the rehabilitation of a historic wooden railroad trestle over Cohas Brook and the rehabilitation of a historic failed culvert. VHB collaborated with the New Hampshire Department of Transportation (NHDOT) and the City of Manchester to create a new link for pedestrians and cyclists along a mile-long stretch of the multiuse path, which has become an integral part of the City of Manchester’s fabric and will help connect many communities through the Granite State Rail Trail.

Read how VHB partners with New Hampshire municipalities to strengthen the state's thriving economy, enhance local communities, and safeguard valuable environmental resources.
