Employee resource groups at VHB provide support, tools, and connections for employees with shared backgrounds or interests to give back to their communities, advance sustainability initiatives, learn from colleagues—and so much more. Two groups at VHB Atlanta were busy this spring making a positive impact at places that reflect the office’s close involvement with historic and natural resources in Atlanta.
Along with the Chattahoochee River Keeper (CRK), volunteers with VHB’s Green Team waded in the water and picked up trash like plastic bottles, bags, toys, and tires along a section of the river and its tributary, Proctor Creek. The Green Team weaves sustainability into the office’s day-to-day operations and encourages fellow employees to share knowledge, curiosity, and passion around topics that lead to greener living.
“Working with the CRK was a great experience for us,” said Ricky Yates, Historic Preservation Planner. “It takes a continuous effort of volunteers to minimize the amount of trash flowing into the Chattahoochee River from stormwaters, and Proctor Creek is one of the main drainages from the west side of midtown. In 2024, CRK removed 53 tons of trash from the river and its tributaries. We hope to continue partnering with CRK and working together to make an impact.”
The VHB Cares employee resource group also volunteered at the historic Oakland Cemetery. The team removed extraneous plants, thinned out irises, and added phlox, black-eyed susans, mulch, and native plants that attract pollinators like butterflies. VHBers cleaned an area surrounding the grave of author Margaret Mitchell, an Atlanta native.
VHB Cares supports employee-led charitable activities through matching donations and volunteering events, embodying VHB's commitment to community engagement. From its inception in 1984, each office shapes the VHB Cares program based on the interests of their people and the needs of the local community.
