The Virginia Railway Express (VRE) hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the formal opening of the new Manassas Park Station Parking Garage, a critical addition to one of the system’s busiest commuter stations. The four-level, 740-space garage improves station access, eases parking demand, and supports the City of Manassas Park’s vision for a vibrant, transit-oriented town center. VHB provided design and engineering services, with Gannett Fleming TransSystems serving as construction manager.
The garage is part of The Village at Manassas Park, a larger redevelopment initiative that includes new housing, retail, a city hall, and a library. With this investment, Manassas Park is transforming its station area into a walkable, mixed-use hub that maximizes the benefits of VRE service while creating new opportunities for residents and businesses.
Prior to construction, VHB evaluated existing and future parking demand, noting that the surface lot was nearly at capacity, and more than 200 riders were parking off-site. Even during the pandemic, ridership quickly rebounded with the return of office commutes, reinforcing the need for expanded capacity.
In response, VHB developed a design that not only meets current demand but positions the station to accommodate future growth. The garage features a pedestrian bridge and stair tower to improve access, along with associated site improvements. Coordination with the City of Manassas Park, Norfolk Southern Railway, and utility providers was critical to advancing the project.
“The garage has become an integral part of the City’s redevelopment efforts to create a housing and transit-oriented district around the station,” said Jim Long, Project Manager at VHB. “This will make public transportation more accessible for the growing community of Manassas Park.”
