On May 1, 2025, Women & Infants Hospital officially inaugurated its state-of-the-art labor and delivery unit, marking a significant advance in maternal healthcare across Rhode Island. This monumental development, led by Care New England, seeks to eliminate disparities in care and enhance the birthing experience for all mothers throughout the state.

The newly unveiled three-story, 18,500-square-foot addition encompasses cutting-edge building enhancements and advanced medical technologies aimed at improving the safety and comfort of expectant mothers. As a leading birthing center, catering to approximately 80 percent of Rhode Island families, the hospital's expansion signifies a major stride in healthcare advancement.

VHB was a strategic partner on the project, providing critical experience in civil and site development, landscape architectural design, and environmental consulting. Along with E4H Architecture, Dimeo, BR+A, WSP and GZA, their collaborative efforts were instrumental in accommodating this significant expansion within the hospital's compact urban campus while providing optimal functionality and accessibility.

Yesterday's ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by VHB's Senior Project Manager Scott Lindgren, along with Providence Managing Director Justin Dufresne and other colleagues from the Providence office. Scott expressed pride in the project, stating, "Collaborating with Care New England on such an impactful initiative has been an honor. We aimed to create a welcoming and inclusive space for all mothers and their families, enhancing their experience during such a pivotal moment."

The opening of this cutting-edge facility underscores Women & Infants Hospital's commitment to leading in innovative healthcare solutions, setting a new bar for maternity care across the region. As families in Rhode Island begin to benefit from these enhanced services, the hospital reaffirms its dedication to providing equitable and exceptional care to its community.
