Northern Virginia

The Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), I-66 Express Mobility Partners LLC, and Indra USA, Inc., are implementing a $3.7 billion public-private partnership project to provide more reliable and faster trips using dynamically tolled Express Lanes in metro Washington, DC. VHB is serving as Engineer-of-Record for the design and construction support of the Electronic Toll Collection System, Intelligent Transportation System, and the Fiber Optic Communication System for 23 miles of Express Lanes alongside three general purpose lanes in each direction on I-66 from I-495 to University Boulevard in Northern Virginia.

In addition, VHB is supporting Indra USA, the System Integrator, with development of design plans for the full project that includes 12 interchanges, existing and future Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority Orange Rail Line improvements, and two Park and Ride lots that provide more than 4,000 parking spaces. Design details include tolling and communication equipment for 26 toll gantry locations, more than 86 PTZ cameras, 40 verification CCTVs, 47 DMS, 45 toll rate signs, 191 microwave vehicle detectors, 117 AVI readers, and more than 130 miles of linear broadband fiber, equipment cabinets, and splice enclosures.
