Boston College School of Social Work

Newton, MA

The Boston College School of Social Work (BCSSW), founded in 1936, is entering an exciting new phase. After nearly 60 years on the Chestnut Hill campus, BCSSW will relocate to the Newton campus to enhance collaboration and connectivity with other Boston College graduate schools and programs. This project involves infrastructure and accessibility upgrades to transform a newly acquired building—previously a convent—into the School of Social Work.

VHB was initially brought on to provide civil and landscape engineering services for this transformation, however, our role was quickly expanded to include additional design services. As part of this expanded scope, VHB is currently supporting the design of a new three-stop elevator for the new wing and entrance of the building while also modernizing the existing elevator in the rear of the building. This effort involves meticulous planning to integrate new construction elements with existing structures, confirming seamless functionality and compliance with current building standards.

VHB’s integrated effort contributes holistically to a functional and compliant facility, effectively supporting Boston College’s mission and its long-term development.
