The Town of Durham is transforming Madbury Road, a key link between downtown Durham, the University of New Hampshire, and Route 4, into a safer, more accessible, and more connected transportation corridor. VHB partnered with the Town and project team to advance a Complete Streets vision that supports pedestrians, cyclists, transit riders, motorists, businesses, and residents alike.
VHB provided transportation engineering, environmental services, public outreach, and permitting services for the 1.8-mile corridor improvement program, which included roadway reconstruction, sidewalks and shared-use paths, ADA accessibility upgrades, pedestrian safety enhancements, traffic-calming features, streetscape improvements, stormwater treatment upgrades, and utility infrastructure improvements.
Recognized with a 2026 Plan NH Merit Award of Excellence, the project strengthens connections among neighborhoods, downtown destinations, local businesses, and the university while creating a safer, more welcoming, and more resilient multimodal corridor for the Durham community.
