Maine State Active Transportation Plan

Maine

As part of the state of Maine’s Family of Plans,” the Maine Department of Transportation (MaineDOT) worked with VHB to develop a State Active Transportation Plan. The first of its kind for MaineDOT, the plan aims to prioritize active transportation policies, programs, and infrastructure investments that will improve safety, quality of life, and economic development, while helping Maine meet its Climate Action Plan goals.

In support of the project, VHB assessed Maine’s existing and proposed active transportation infrastructure, including rail trails, greenways, bike lanes, and shoulder bikeways. More than 100 miles of state-owned, inactive rail corridors throughout Maine were also assessed for interim trail use and prioritized based on cost estimates, potential use, and the expected economic, transportation, and environmental benefits.
