VHB is proud to announce that four of our projects have been recognized by the American Council of Engineering Companies of New York (ACEC-NY) at the 2026 Engineering Excellence Awards. These awards celebrate projects that demonstrate technical excellence and meaningful contributions to the built environment.
This year, VHB received a Platinum Award for the Northwell Mather Hospital Frey Family Emergency Department Expansion, Gold Awards for the Mill Creek Road Emergency Reconstruction and NewYork-Presbyterian’s “The One,” and a Silver Award for the City of White Plains Vision Zero Action Plan.
Doubling Emergency Care at Mather Hospital
Northwell Mather Hospital sought to nearly double the size of its emergency department while maintaining uninterrupted operations on an active campus. The Frey Family Emergency Department Expansion improves site circulation, introduces dedicated ambulance and drop-off areas, and relocates the heliport to enhance emergency response. Innovative stormwater solutions reduce flood risk and strengthen resilience, resulting in a more efficient, accessible, and future-ready healthcare facility.
Restoring Critical Access at Mill Creek Road
Following severe flooding, the only access road for local residents was completely washed out. The Mill Creek Road Emergency Reconstruction quickly restored connectivity for residents, stabilizing the corridor and improving drainage to reduce future flood risk. The design also protected nearby historic resources, demonstrating a thoughtful approach to resilient infrastructure recovery.
Transforming a Corporate Campus into Modern Outpatient Care
NewYork-Presbyterian’s “The One” reimagines a former corporate campus as a modern outpatient healthcare facility, adapting aging buildings and infrastructure for medical use while addressing challenging site conditions. The project transforms the site by repurposing existing structures, upgrading stormwater systems, and improving pedestrian and vehicular circulation. The result is a connected, patient-focused campus that expands access to care, reduces construction impacts, and supports long-term environmental performance.
Advancing Street Safety for All in White Plains
The City of White Plains sought to eliminate serious injuries and fatalities on its roadways, requiring a comprehensive approach to address high-risk corridors and improve safety for all users. The Vision Zero Action Plan applies a proactive, data-informed methodology to identify priority locations and recommend targeted improvements, informed by extensive community engagement. This actionable strategy positions the City to advance near-term safety improvements and secure future funding.
These recognitions reflect a year of work focused on advancing healthcare access, strengthening infrastructure, and improving safety across New York.
Congratulations to all this year’s winners!
