Graduate researcher Bryce Donaghue, guided by mentor Doug DeBerry, Senior Environmental Scientist at VHB, was recently featured in Yahoo! News to discuss their innovative research exploring how bats can successfully coexist with solar equipment. Rather than following the traditional practice of planting turfgrass on solar sites, many solar developers have embraced using pollinator-friendly plants on their facilities, and Doug and Bryce are studying the ecosystem benefits. For example, these plants attract insects to live around the equipment, which creates optimal hunting grounds for bats. Although their analysis is still in its early stages, they are encouraged by the initial findings that support the use of pollinator species to benefit local bat populations.
