This week, Senior ITS Network Specialist Matt Picanso led a thoughtful presentation on automatic incident detection at the ITS Connecticut Annual Meeting. This event brings together ITS consultants, municipalities, institutions, and state agencies to discuss the latest advancements in transportation technology.
Matt partnered with a representative from Axis Communications for their session, “Automatic Incident Detection: Leveraging Your Existing Infrastructure.” They focused on how transportation agencies can leverage existing CCTV networks to flag roadway events in real time. Using embedded video analytics, agencies can transform their current camera systems into automatic incident detection tools without purchasing costly new hardware deployments.
Their presentation covered the technical approach to deploying video analytics on existing CCTV infrastructure, integration considerations for traffic management centers, and real-word case studies demonstrating the operational and safety benefits of edge-based analytics.
“In real time, this technology can detect vehicles stopped in the breakdown lane, objects falling from vehicles, and wrong-way driving—one of the most dangerous incident types,” said Matt. “Where seconds of early warning can prevent a fatal crash, using automatic incident detection can make a world of difference.”
