VHB's Managing Director, MA-TPO/TS, Niki Hastings, PE, recently participated in the Designing Mobility Equity Panel alongside esteemed clients and partners, including Harvard University. Niki shared her insight, passion, and technical knowledge during the wide-ranging discussion exploring how equity is embedded in both process and outcome when it comes to mobility and urban design.

The event was hosted by The Hideo Sasaki Foundation—established by multidisciplinary design firm Sasaki—which aims to promote equity in design and amplify voices for systemic change. The panel brought together designers, city leaders, and community members to discuss critical mobility issues related to age, ability, economic status, and gender. Together, they explored innovative ways to address these multifaceted challenges and integrate solutions into the design process to drive more inclusive outcomes.
“Mobility equity isn't just a transportation issue—it's a quality-of-life issue,” said Niki. “The most effective solutions happen when we co-create with our partners, listen to communities, and prioritize long-term impact over short-term fixes. As new mobility and clean energy options advance, overcoming barriers to mobility equity will play a crucial role in ensuring equal access and opportunities for all communities.”

Niki's involvement exemplifies VHB's core value of collaboration and highlights our unwavering commitment to partnering with organizations like Sasaki and Harvard University to drive meaningful changes in the communities we serve. As we look to the future, VHB is dedicated to advancing innovative solutions to overcome existing barriers to mobility equity. By championing accessible spaces and inclusive mobility for all individuals, VHB aims to provide equal access and opportunities across communities, paving the way for transformative systemic change in the years to come.
