Last week, a groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction on the Waterbury Train Station Redevelopments. Supported by VHB’s design team, this major $35.2 million infrastructure project seeks to enhance accessibility, improve rider experience, and reconnect the Waterbury community to the historic Union Station building.

VHB led the design for the new 1,600-square-foot indoor waiting area in the Union Station building, a significant component of the station’s improvements. Originally used as a baggage storage area, the space will become a modern and comfortable waiting room for passengers, featuring 21 seats, restrooms, security cameras, and customer information displays. VHB’s design preserves the character of the historic building, while also integrating current technology for convenience and durability. The new waiting area is expected to open to the public in fall 2026.

This improvement, along with additional planned renovations, is part of a larger Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) undertaking to upgrade all six train stations along the Waterbury Branch Line to modernize a key regional rail corridor and support transit-oriented growth.

Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont and CTDOT Commissioner Garrett Eucalitto attended the ceremony and spoke about the project’s importance as an investment in Waterbury’s long-term growth and continued revitalization.
