Helen Porter Rehabilitation and Nursing supports residents with needs ranging from short-term post-acute rehabilitation and therapy to long-term skilled nursing, memory care, and respite care. To further its mission of improving community health and quality of life in a welcoming, home-like environment, the center developed a new courtyard to provide residents with the freedom to enjoy restorative time outdoors and nature within a safe, secure setting.
VHB’s landscape architecture team planned and designed a therapeutic memory care courtyard grounded in familiar, comforting experiences that can spark positive emotions and connections to the past. Welcoming gathering areas and defined walking loops invite residents to meander throughout the space, while water features, accessible gardening areas, bird feeders, and a pollinator garden enrich daily routines and support sensory engagement. Together, the courtyard features expand opportunities for safe outdoor time and meaningful connection, strengthening resident well-being while creating a more welcoming, restorative environment for families and staff.
