I-77 and Gilead Road Diverging Diamond Interchange

Mecklenburg County, NC

At a very congested intersection along I-77 in Huntersville, NC, VHB designed a new Diverging Diamond Interchange (DDI) to improve vehicle travel and enhance mobility for pedestrians. With Novant Health Emergency Center located adjacent to the intersection and several restaurants and retail stores along the corridor, the DDI significantly improves high traffic volume conditions.

VHB navigated multiple stakeholder goals on an accelerated schedule, leading from project development through final design, including preparing NEPA-compliance documentation, preliminary designs, technical analyses, and right-of-way and final designs. VHB’s Safety Team and knowledgeable national bicycle and pedestrian professionals assisted with the accommodations to improve mobility, which included a unique approach to put pedestrian amenities in a barrier-separated median to move safely over the interstate.
