I-70 Section K10 ITS Design

Westmoreland County, PA

PennDOT District 12-0 is modernizing the I-70 Section K10 corridor in western Pennsylvania, combining roadway realignment and resurfacing with technology enhancements that will help the agency more effectively monitor roadway conditions and share timely information with drivers.

VHB is leading the ITS design, helping PennDOT replace a legacy wireless communications system with a more resilient network. The design includes a 13-mile continuous fiber optic backbone and updated roadside technology to better connect traffic monitoring devices, Dynamic Message Signs, and other ITS infrastructure with PennDOT’s traffic management operations.

A key part of the project is maintaining existing ITS functionality during construction, allowing PennDOT to preserve critical monitoring and traveler information capabilities while roadway improvements are underway. Once complete, the upgraded system will help PennDOT detect and verify incidents more efficiently, communicate closures and changing roadway conditions, and improve driver awareness.

With a modernized communications network, PennDOT will have stronger tools to manage traffic, respond to incidents more quickly, and provide drivers with a safer, more informed travel experience.
