This week, three VHB thought leaders presented at the Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE) International and Florida Puerto Rico District Annual Meeting and Exhibition. The 2025 conference theme was “Innovative Pathways to Safer Transportation,” and presentations focused on practical strategies and forward-thinking technological solutions to revolutionize future safety and mobility.
VHB was a proud sponsor and exhibitor at the event, which brought together more than 1,600 transportation professionals from across the country and around the world to share innovation and advancements in transportation safety.

Director of Transportation Systems Joe Balskus presented during the panel session “Innovative Roundabouts for Multimodal Users,” which offered insights on groundbreaking roundabout topics from across the industry, best practices, and updates on design guidance. Joe spoke alongside our partner from the Capitol Region Council of Governments (CRCOG) about the Connecticut Roundabout Screening Study and shared how our team used an advanced geographic information system (GIS) application tool to analyze the study’s massive data set and provide recommendations to CRCOG for safer roundabout intersections.
Joe recently led another presentation with our CRCOG partner on the Roundabout Screening Study at the Transportation Research Board (TRB) Roundabouts and Geometric Design Conference in June, highlighting how the study’s process and results could influence future intersection screening efforts nationwide.
During the session “Dare, Able, Invite: Human-Centered Mobility Planning Inspired by Dutch Principles,” Director of Mobility Amir Rizavi offered insights from case studies illustrating people-focused transportation solutions. Amir also spoke on the panel presentation “Redefining Event Mobility: Transportation Planning for the ICC T20 World Cup Cricket Stadium,” focusing on strategic planning, multi-agency collaboration, and innovative mobility solutions for high-profile events.

Director of Smart Communities Curt Ostrodka moderated the panel discussion “Electric Mobility Planning, Implementation, and Readiness for Unexpected Events,” which focused on strategies for coordinating and integrating safe and accessible electric mobility for all users. This session covered planning and infrastructure needs for electric vehicles, connected and autonomous vehicles (CAV), and advanced air mobility (AAM).
Transportation Consultant Rei Watanabe and Project Engineer Ashley Domogala participated in the ITE Consultants Council’s Annual Sandbox Competition, which challenged teams to develop a transferable planning approach for mobility hubs and create a conceptual design for a mobility hub at a given location. Transportation Safety Analyst John Stern competed in the ITE Collegiate Traffic Bowl, a competition that tests participating teams’ knowledge of ITE, transportation planning, and engineering topics.
At a graduation ceremony held at the conference, Transportation Engineer Alvaro Calle celebrated his successful completion of the LeadershipITE program.
