VHB is helping shape the Triangle region’s next phase of community-centered growth with back-to-back groundbreakings for two projects this month: Barton Oaks, a community that will serve persons with incomes between 20% and 70% of Area Median Income, and the Croasdaile Village Senior Living Campus expansion.
Project partners gathered along Strickland Road to celebrate the Barton Oaks groundbreaking in North Raleigh. Developed by Oppidan, this project will add 152 1-, 2-, and 3-bedroom apartment homes and represents a first-of-its-kind approach within a protected watershed.
VHB supported the rezoning efforts which provided stringent stormwater commitments including Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI) practices for the future development that exceeded all published requirements for development within the Falls Lake Watershed. This required significant coordination with Raleigh Water and other stakeholders.
Nicole Bennett, AICP, VHB Community Impact & Resilience Strategist, attended the groundbreaking and provided remarks on behalf of the Raleigh Housing Authority, where she serves as a Board member. The Housing Authority supported the development by issuing the bonds for the tax credit deal.
“Barton Oaks is situated in one of Raleigh’s most affluent areas with limited affordable housing options,” said Nicole. “Increasing access and choice for residents with limited incomes affirms the dignity of all persons, and dignity is everything.”
Additionally, partners broke ground on the Phase 4 expansion for Croasdaile Village Senior Living Campus, in Durham, to support a growing senior population. The expansion will add four apartment buildings, 21 cottage homes in a pocket neighborhood, a healthcare courtyard, and sports pavilion. VHB is providing civil engineering and landscape architectural services.
As these projects move from groundbreaking to construction, they signal a continued investment in the Triangle Region’s future.
