CTDOT Selects VHB for Task Order Rail Engineering Contract

VHB to continue supporting improvements to the state’s railroad system.

A red and silver Metro-North Railroad train travels along a track on a clear day with scattered clouds. Trees and houses are visible in the background.

In an increasingly competitive market, VHB has once again been selected for the Connecticut Department of Transportation (CTDOT) Task Order Rail Engineering contract. This marks the third consecutive time CTDOT has chosen VHB for this contract and fourth time overall.

Under this contract, VHB will continue to support CTDOT in the design of capitol railroad projects (such as stations, catenary, and bridges); the design of railroad track, communication and signalization, and traction power; and the field inspection and design of repairs of railroad station facilities, support buildings, railroad bridges, culverts, and retaining walls.

Railway tracks stretch into the distance, elevated on a bridge. Overhead power lines run parallel to the tracks.

"This win is a strong indicator of the trust the CTDOT has in VHB’s transit and rail professionals to help them maintain their rail infrastructure, improve railroad operations, and enhance the traveling public’s experience,” said Connecticut Director of Transit and Rail Tony Sardilli.

For more than two decades, VHB has partnered with CTDOT to deliver rail projects that have increased transit accessibility, improved rider experience, and enhanced connectivity for the state's communities.

Waterbury Train Station Improvements

VHB led the design for Union Station's new 1,600-square-foot indoor waiting area, featuring 21 seats, restrooms, security cameras, and customer information displays. This improvement, along with additional planned renovations, is part of a larger CTDOT undertaking to upgrade all six train stations along the Waterbury Branch Line to modernize a key regional rail corridor and support transit-oriented growth.

Stamford Transportation Center (STC) Master Plan

A multi-office, multi-disciplinary VHB team worked together to complete a Master Plan for the STC. This effort involved assisting CTDOT with a comprehensive review and evaluation of the existing STC site and environs and providing recommendations and conceptual improvements that will lead to increased public and private transit use as well as enhanced vehicular, bicycle and pedestrian access. Our recommendations addressed both short- and long-term needs of the STC and aimed to support a sustainable, transformative vision.

West Haven Commuter Rail Station

To support West Haven’s vision for a more walkable, transit-focused district, VHB spearheaded the development process for a new infill commuter rail station along the heavily traveled New Haven Line (NHML) between Milford and New Haven. From site selection and environmental review through conceptual, preliminary, and final design, as well as engineering support during construction, VHB delivered a critical regional transportation facility that now anchors West Haven’s growing TOD district.

Our team is ready to continue collaborating with CTDOT on meaningful rail projects that will benefit Connecticut’s traveling public for years to come.
