Fall Line Trail Southern Section Reaches Major Milestone

Groundbreaking brings the 43-mile regional trail one step closer to reality.

October 15, 2026

A new chapter for the Fall Line Trail began on October 7 with the groundbreaking of the trail's Southern Section in Colonial Heights, Virginia. As Engineer of Record and lead designer for the design-build project, VHB worked closely with Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and our design-build partner, Allan Myers, to help bring nearly 10 miles of new shared-use trail between Petersburg and Route 10 in Chesterfield County to life, advancing the larger vision of the Fall Line Trail.

When complete, the Fall Line Trail will be a 43-mile paved corridor connecting communities from Ashland to Petersburg. Spanning seven localities and serving a region of more than 1.3 million people, the trail is designed to improve mobility, expand recreation opportunities, and support economic growth. VHB has played a key role in advancing the Southern Section, leading the design that includes four major bridges, safer roadway crossings, stormwater improvements, and environmental compliance measures. More than 20 miles of the overall trail are already open or under construction, with the full corridor targeted for completion in 2034.

"It's exciting to see the Fall Line Trail reach this milestone knowing that we are getting closer to the day where people will see the benefit of this project," said Tyson Rosser, Director of Transportation Engineering at VHB. "Years from now, people may not think about how much coordination it took to make a trail like this possible, but they'll experience the result every time they use it."

The groundbreaking marks another important step toward completing the full Fall Line Trail network and reflects VHB's experience delivering complex transportation and active mobility projects across Virginia and beyond. As construction moves forward, the Southern Section will help strengthen connections between communities while supporting safer, more accessible travel options throughout the region.
