The Mary Ellen McCormack Redevelopment in South Boston will transform Boston’s first public housing development, built during the Great Depression, into a vibrant mixed-income and mixed-use neighborhood. This extensive project will replace 1,016 existing affordable residential units and add more than 2,000 middle-income and market-rate apartments in a transit-oriented location. The site is located adjacent to the Andrew Square MBTA Red Line subway station, near job centers, healthcare providers, and community amenities.
VHB collaborated with the WinnCompanies and the Boston Housing Authority (BHA) to provide site and construction design services for the 3,300-unit complex. We led the review processes required for the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Massachusetts Environmental Policy Act (MEPA), and Boston Article 80 Large Project permits. Throughout the planning and development process, the project team prioritized sustainability, accessibility and connectivity. The revitalization plan features green spaces, recreational areas, bike lanes, more than 70,000 square feet of retail space, and areas for small businesses. At the heart of the project is the new Community of Opportunity Center, which aims to create economic mobility, community connectivity, and improve health outcomes. The center will offer job-training, children’s activities, senior services, and educational classes.
