The Wel at Lindenhurst is a modern 260-unit apartment complex strategically located near the Long Island Railroad station. Developed on a former industrial site, this transit-oriented development has played a significant role in revitalizing downtown Lindenhurst. By adding these residential units to the area, The Wel has spurred further investment in the community, attracting new businesses and enriching the community.
VHB played an integral role in the development of The Wel by providing planning and design services that emphasized sustainable suburban growth. Our support was integral in creating a new floating zoning district and obtaining site plan approval. We prepared a Voluntary Draft Environmental Impact Statement, which was essential for the project's approval in accordance with SEQRA. Our landscape architecture team enhanced the site with new amenities and focused on preserving and enhancing an on-site wetland by rehabilitating and daylighting an existing stream. In addition, VHB prepared stream mitigation plans and provided permitting support for a joint freshwater wetlands application with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYSDEC) and United Stated Army Corps of Engineers (USACE).
The Wel not only enriches the area but stands as a testament to the positive impact of thoughtful community-focused development. In recognition of its significance, Vision Long Island—an organization dedicated to promoting livable, economically sustainable, and environmentally responsible growth through Smart Growth—honored the development with a Smart Growth Award.
