PTC Truck Parking Management System

Statewide, PA

The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) is addressing the statewide shortage of safe and legal truck parking through a combination of physical expansion and technology-enabled solutions. The PTC’s Truck Parking Management System integrates designated truck parking locations, including rest areas and weigh stations, into real-time traveler information platforms, improving on-site visibility, circulation, and wayfinding for commercial drivers.

VHB played a central role in advancing this initiative along the Turnpike by designing and deploying a system that provides real-time parking availability information. Using in-pavement truck detection and closed-circuit cameras at 10 service plazas, the system accurately tracks available spaces and helps drivers locate legal parking before facilities reach capacity. Dynamic messaging at select plazas further guides circulation and reduces unnecessary searching, supporting safety for both commercial and passenger vehicles.

VHB led full lifecycle delivery, including design, procurement, installation, integration, and operational support, while coordinating with utility owners and stakeholders to minimize construction impacts. Training provided to Turnpike staff confirms long-term operation and scalability. The system complements physical parking expansions, improving mobility, safety, and freight efficiency across the Turnpike network.
