Interstate 89 Exit 17 Reconstruction

Colchester, Vermont

VHB recently completed the design for the Interstate 89 Exit 17 Reconstruction Project, which is now actively under construction. This comprehensive project entails the replacement of the existing US Route 2 bridge over the interstate, reconfiguration of exit ramps, lane widening, installation of new traffic signals, enhancements for bicycle and pedestrian pathways, improved lighting, and stormwater treatment solutions. As part of the right-of-way process, VHB performed a Phase I Environmental Site Assessment for due diligence before permanent land acquisition.

In a pilot initiative for VTrans, VHB employed advanced three-dimensional modeling technology to streamline and enhance project delivery. Using Bentley OpenRoads Designer, OpenBridge Modeler, and ProStructures, VHB created a fully three-dimensional model of the interchange and its structures, which facilitated quality assurance checks and helped VHB refine engineering plans during the final design phases. During construction, the model has been a valuable resource that facilitates communication between VHB, VTrans, and the construction contractor and introduces project efficiencies. In just one of the model’s helpful applications, the construction team used the model to understand the configuration and placement of reinforcing steel around the bridge piers, while VTrans field staff confirmed the reinforcing steel was compliant with design specifications and tolerances, such that the project is built properly and delays are avoided.

Beyond the technical achievements, the addition of dedicated bike and pedestrian pathways promotes sustainable transit solutions, enhancing regional connectivity and improving traffic flow and safety for commuters and freight transporters alike. Meanwhile, new stormwater treatment elements address environmental concerns, showcasing a commitment to ecological stewardship.
