RIPTA Providence Transit Center Redevelopment

Providence, RI

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority (RIPTA) is advancing plans to redevelop the Providence Transit Center to enhance regional mobility and support long‑term transit‑oriented development (TOD) goals in downtown Providence.

Working under lead developer and design-builder Gilbane, VHB has supported the project since its earliest stages, providing site evaluation, planning, and transportation analysis. We collaborated with RIPTA and project stakeholders to evaluate multiple potential locations citywide, assessing each site based on traffic safety, circulation, access, and overall feasibility. Our work included site due diligence and preliminary traffic analysis to inform site selection decisions and help align transit operations with surrounding land uses, including proximity to rail service, employment centers, multi-family housing, and future mixed‑use development opportunities.

This early planning phase established a strong technical foundation for a public-private partnership (P3) and alternative delivery approach, supporting advancement into future design and permitting phases as funding and delivery strategies are finalized.
