VHB was recognized on May 20 at the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC) 2025 Engineering Excellence Awards (EEA) Gala in Washington, DC, where two of our transportation infrastructure projects received national recognition. The prestigious EEA program is widely regarded as the “Academy Awards of the engineering industry,” celebrating outstanding achievements in engineering that benefit communities across the country.
Our work on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Transform I-66 project and the District Department of Transportation’s (DDOT) Smart Street Lighting project earned accolades at the national level after first being recognized by the ACEC Metropolitan Washington chapter in December. These awards underscore VHB’s commitment to innovation, collaboration, and delivering solutions that improve safety, sustainability, and quality of life.
The Transform I-66 project is part of VDOT’s $3.7B “Transform I-66 Outside the Beltway” initiative to reduce congestion in Northern Virginia. VHB served as Engineer of Record for the Managed Lanes System, designing and integrating advanced tolling, communications, and safety technologies across a 23-mile corridor. The result is a more efficient, connected, and safer travel experience for drivers.
In the District of Columbia, the Smart Street Lighting project replaced 75,000 outdated fixtures with energy-efficient, remotely managed light-emitting diode (LED) lights. VHB supported the initiative with traffic, pedestrian, and bicycle planning; a construction management system to track installation progress; and tools to enhance maintenance and service delivery citywide.
