Construction Progress Continues for Long Bridge Project

VHB supports design and construction of Virginia’s most significant rail investment.

June 12, 2026

As changes move forward at the Long Bridge project site, VHB continues design and construction support at one of Virginia’s largest rail infrastructure investments, helping relieve a major East Coast rail bottleneck.

After leading the Preliminary Engineering Phase VHB continues to work in close coordination with Virginia Passenger Rail Authority (VPRA) and project partners to help maintain schedule, safety, and operational reliability. Most recently, our team was selected to deliver Construction Engineering and Inspection (CEI) services for both the North and South packages through the end of construction.

“It’s the team’s pleasure to support VPRA and leverage our deep project history in order to allow construction to move forward safely and on schedule while sustaining reliable rail service,” said Alice Ellis, PE, VHB Structural Engineer. “The Long Bridge Project represents a generational investment in transportation infrastructure, and our team is proud to support its successful delivery.”

The Long Bridge Project extends beyond just the construction of a new two‑track passenger rail bridge and will ultimately construct a continuous four-track corridor from the Long Bridge Aquatic Center in Arlington to L’Enfant Plaza in DC. In total, the project includes seven new bridges: five rail bridges and two pedestrian and cyclist bridges.

Once complete, the project will improve reliability and expand capacity for both passenger and freight trains traveling between Virginia and Washington, DC. As Owner’s Representative to VPRA, VHB continues to provide comprehensive oversight and technical support for this $2.2B project.
