The recent issue of Railway Track & Structures features VHB’s partnership with the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA) and Barletta Heavy Division in the replacement of six bridges within the state. The project only allows for nine total weekends of rail line shutdowns so that impact on riders is as minimal as possible.
Most of the bridges are being replaced with Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) techniques, including self-propelled modular transporters (SPMTs) to move the superstructures into place.
