Signal & Communication Systems

Signal and communication systems are critical for the safety and efficiency of rail operations. With safety and risk mitigation top-of-mind throughout design, construction, and commissioning, VHB’s engineers and designers develop practical, effective signal and communication solutions that can be phased and built efficiently while maintaining existing rail service.

Partnering with project owners, contractors, and consultants alike, VHB offers deep experience, collaborative engagement, and a proven record of delivering thoughtful solutions for rail projects from simple to complex. Our multidisciplinary team brings decades of experience designing and upgrading rail systems for major transit hubs, including Boston and New York City. We have worked across diverse geographies, rail environments, and client needs—providing tailored solutions for signal and communication upgrades, new system installations, signal house design, and advanced technologies such as Positive Train Control (PTC) and communications-based train control (CBTC).

Leveraging in-house operations simulation modeling, our designers can test proposed system changes and pinpoint potential bottlenecks before they impact service. We translate this insight into targeted improvements, enhancing the reliability, capacity, and safety of rail operations while minimizing downtime.
