For Maine Rivers, VHB provided design, engineering, and construction phase services for a denil fish passage retrofit on the existing China Lake Outlet Dam. This project represented the final stage of Maine Rivers’ Alewife Restoration Initiative removing six barriers along the outlet stream to open the 3,850 acres of spawning habitat in China Lake to an estimated 800,000 to 950,000 alewives, or river herring, and other species. VHB developed a hydraulic model of the dam spillway using HEC-RAS software to support fishway design meeting Maine Department of Environmental Protection Operating Schedule requirements for China Lake.
