The Wentworth Farm Conservation Area, which includes Owens Pond, is a popular local destination for walking, fishing, and kayaking. As part of a concurrent transmission line upgrade project, VHB was brought on to assist with improvements to a primary pond spillway and adjacent wetland to alleviate flooding concerns and support the flow of migrating fish from the pond to the nearby Fort River.
Flood control strategies included native plantings to absorb overflow and large stone placement within the spillway to slow water during peak flows and reduce bank erosion. These improvements also incorporated a series of deep pools and rock cross vanes designed to facilitate fish passage.
VHB’s role included design, permitting, and construction support for the primary concrete spillway, cut-off wall, and outlet channel. Our team provided construction drawings, technical specifications, material quantity estimates, bid reviews, submittal evaluations, and construction oversight throughout the three-month construction period.
